Thing 12 - Read about Wikis

List of wikis

That's it. What it means is that, when you come to a wiki, you are able to read what the wiki's community has written. By clicking an "edit" button on an article, you are able to edit the article's text. You can add or change anything you like in the article you are reading.

Wikis are an excellent tool to use for many different things such as:

- socialising
- Sharing information
- Reasearching for school/tafe/university

Wikis can also be used for education because you can share information across a classroom or year level where they can login to edit and create posts.

Thing 11 - Discover Del.icio.us

Delicious is an online bookmark manager. It allows you to add bookmarks and share them with others. It’s great if you want access to your bookmarks from multiple locations, eg home and office.

This tool is very useful if you are looking for a site that you have forgotten the name of or are saving a bookmark for another person, who can access it all around the world to quickly and easily share information and data on websites without sending or sharing any types of files.

Thing 10 - Social networking

MySpace -

Myspace is a huge online social networking site which enables people to share their thoughts, comment on eachothers pages, send messages, send instant messages, compose messages. It helps connect with new people, form relationships safely and securely, share upcomming events, photos and even manipulate your own personal myspace page.

Facebook -
Facebook is pretty much the same as MySpace but is gaining a larger audience because of its Versatility and applications which can be added to your personal page.

Thing 09 - Explore Slideshare

I found very useful presentations, they can be used for many things such as tutorials, gathering and sharing information and different types of educational purposes which include:

- Gathering of information

- Research

They are also easily accessable to anyone in the world and can be shared easily by sending a link to somebody

Thing 08 - Investigate YouTube

I have chosen a web 2.0 documentary for users who do not know what web 2.0 is and to show that i understand web 2.0 better than i did before i commenced these tasks.

Youtube is loved by millions because you can find pretty much any video that you are after including music videos, the-best-of movies and tv shows, trailers, tutorials and so on.

YouTube can be slow if you do not have a fast internet connection and can chew up your download limit quite easily.

Thing 07 - Play with flickr

I took the tour of flickr.com and found that the site is a very useful tool for uploading and viewing images.

This is the first time i have heard of this site and now that i have heard of it i will regularly use it to browse through images and upload images.

Thing 06 - Comment on a blog post

For this task i commented on Eddie Power's blog

http://deplomaiteddie.blogspot.com/2009/03/thing-06-comment-on-blog-post.html#comments

Commenting on other peoples blogs is a great way to share information to the world and let
them have an input into your posts as well as ask questions.

Thing 05 - Subscribe to blogs

This task consisted of uploading an opml file onto google reader.

I downloaded the BlogFeeds.opml file and uploaded by clicking on settings on the top right corner of the page, then the import/export tab at the top of the screen.

After that i browsed through some of the feeds this was easy to do because all of the feeds i had uploaded were on the left hand side bar.

Thing 04 - Create an RSS reader account

I created an accound with blogger.com which automatically registered me with google reader.

Here is a screenshot of my google reader home page.

Thing 03 - Create a blog and register it

This week i created my blog from my existing blog page and registered it.

I also sent an e-mail confirming this to the teacher.

I previously used www.blogger.com to make posts for classes in 2008 which helped me to better understand the subjects.

Thing 02 - Extend Your Browser

Extending your browser consists of web extensions.

Using firefox, i installed a google search, yahoo search and Wikipedia search.
By going to tools > add-ons and clicking the Get Add-ons tab, you can get a list of recommended addons for firefox or search for add-ons that you would like to have on your browser.

These are useful to safe time and keep your current page(s) while searching in different areas. This can be good for research or just surfing the internet. Add-ons are useful to automate tasks which usually would be more difficult to the average computer user.

Thing 01 - Read about the program

Looking at the list of 23 things in the program i saw that each of the tasks may take up to 30-40 mins.
The tasks will comprise of 25-50 words per week and usually consist of a practical discovery excersise.
